Ultrasound Guided Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is an injection procedure aimed to treat chronic pain from joints. This treatment utlizes platelets from the blood and their growth factors to stimulate growth of cartilage in tendons and ligaments in damaged joints. Most patients will experience pain relief after 1-3 treatments.
How is this treatment performed?
Blood is withdrawn from the patient (60ml). Then it is spun in a centrifuge to extract the platelets and growth factors. This fluid will then be injected through ultrasound guidance into the damaged joints. We also may add viscosupplementation (Durolane) with the PRP or as a sole primary treatment.
What areas can be treated?
We only use PRP for the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle and hip. We use prolotherapy or prolozone for neck and low back pain.
Are there any side effects?
Immediately after the treatment the area injected can become sore. We suggest taking tylenol and icing the area. This aggravation can last a few days to a week. There is also a small risk of infection when using a needle to pierce the skin.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the severity of the joint. It can be 1-4 treatments spread 4-6 weeks apart.
How much does it cost?
Cost of PRP will be $300-350 depending per joint. The viscosupplementation (ie Durolane) costs $400. This also includes the consultation and ultrasound exam.
